Disclaimer: in 2024 it is now possible to natively include all system audio when sharing an entire screen on windows, thus this article is irrelevant.
You can use this method to share system audio including NVDA and probably other screen readers to discord, however there will be no visuals.
To get all of your system audio to go through, stream any file explorer window. Most programs executed from explorer will pipe the audio. You may need to relaunch apps after sharing the screen if they aren’t being heard immediately.
This won't send your NVDA speech through yet, unless you have already done the next step.
To send your speech through, you will need to restart NVDA through the run dialog or the NVDA folder in file explorer. The run dialog must point to the NVDA.exe file from file explorer, it can not be any other explorer application.
The reason for this is that when restarting NVDA in other ways, it doesn't actually run the executable.
You can restart NVDA before or after starting the stream, it doesn't matter.
To stop sending your speech through, just restart NVDA any other way, like the desktop icon or alt control n.
This way you can keep your privacy of checking messages or whatever while not having to end the stream. Simply restart NVDA using a method above to resume sharing speech.
If you would like to access the desktop, enter the run dialog or windows notification area, then press escape. Pressing windows d or windows m will pause the stream until the streaming window is refocused.
Unfortunately, there are a few applications that do not send audio when using this method. You may also need to close and reopen some applications after starting the stream for the audio to start going through.
Applications that don't send audio:
Sequence Storm.
Brave/Google Chrome.
Applications that may require restart:
Foobar 2000.
If you find an application that does not share audio with this method, please remind me to update this post.
Enjoy sharing your system audio and speech with just a few steps!

Thumbs up +4
